When a carrier is setup is there any way to change the short name to match the description.

I think yes you can do it but

Short name is the FREIGHT_CODE and non editable field after saving it for first time.Its a header level value.

Under short name you define many shipping methods - line level values,

Carrier name/shipping method is derived from it. But you can manually update it. So for the first shipping method you can have the same name for shipping method and short name.

I didnt read your qs properly.. You 'er asking about ship method description not the ship method name.

Yes the description can be same...for all the shipping methods and it can be the short code...

Go to inventory setup after defining the shipping method in OM/PO responsibility.
Navigate to Inv -> set up -> organization -> shipping method
next query the ship method and change the description.

But how thats going to help the business????
